Whether your coat will require re-proofing depends on the amount and type of usage your coat will get.  With normal wear you are unlikely to need to re-proof your oilskin for at least 10 years.  Because many of our coats last for decades and are handed down for up to 3 generations, we have 2 re-proofing products available.  A pump pack product, Oilskin Reproofer which is handy for reproofing small areas such as the seat of motor cycle pants; and a can of the original wax proofing treatment called Coat Dressing which is used when you want to reproof the entire coat.

  • Used to restore oilskin to it’s original waterproof finish
  • 400g / 14oz can – sufficient to treat a full length coat

Procedure for using Coat Dressing:

  • Wash coat in mild detergent to remove any dirt, grease and sweat so dressing can be absorbed right into the fabric
  • Dry naturally – do not use clothes dryer or iron
  • Place can of Coat Dressing (lid removed) in a saucepan and fill saucepan with water to about 2.5cm / 1ins below top of can
  • Bring water to the boil and allow to simmer until wax becomes the consistency of honey
  • Leave can in the hot water while working so it retains this consistency
  • If the lining in your coat is loose ie not sewn in all round like a jacket or vest you can pull the sleeves through – reach up between coat and lining and gradually pull on lining to turn sleeve inside out
  • Apply with paint brush to inside of sleeve first, then to inside of coat front and back
  • Pull sleeves through to right side and continue applying to outside of coat
  • When finished hang to dry completely, preferably in warm sun so wax will absorb and distribute evenly
